I do want us to move on from Reid’s comments. It is crucial to get moving on an important political agenda this year. But I also hope that we as Americans move away from narrow, racialized notions about whose voice is valuable and deserves to be heard.

Six months after inauguration, the current president of the United States only has 8 out of 10 people assured he’s Constitutionally eligible for the gig. I’m pretty sure the people who don’t agree with Reid’s statements saw them as terrible holdovers from a former time, dismissing them because people don’t think like that anymore. The others don’t see anything wrong with the statements, and thus don’t care. Either way, kind of a waste of time to write a column about it.
